We’ve Lost Control…

(Part 2 of 2) In Part 1 of this series, I wrote a piece titled, “When We’re Not Strong for the Fight”, I explained that conservatives in exile from the Elephant Graveyard that the Republican Party has become need to recast themselves as wall builders. The analogy of Nehemiah was not intended to reduce that biblical story to mere political hype. This is critical to what many in the now splintered conservative movement must do to return to first principles.

As we watched the RNC goose step its way into an authoritarian cult with Donald Trump as its head, many grieved. I know I did. Tuesday, after the party made Mr. Trump as its nominee, my heart broke. Once a nation with free and fair elections, now we are confronted with a binary choice between two evil people who will lead this country further away from first principles — and away from the Judaeo Christian values that were part of our nation’s founding. We have lost control. And that may well be a good thing.

BlameCast is not a uniquely religious forum, and it’s not my purpose to preach here. But for many of our readers, the notion that “God is in control” is both comfort and instruction. Republicans were once a party of vision — and a commitment to freedom, as Senator Ted Cruz so eloquently explained in his convention speech. Please indulge me for a moment of personal bias on this point: freedom is neither possible nor possible to preserve without an understanding that the Declaration of Independence was correct that our rights come from our Maker. If that is true, than failure to recognize how little we have to do with our own freedom comes at great peril.

We are called to defend freedom with our blood and treasure. The founders pledged their lives and their sacred honor to that. Ted Cruz willingly sacrificed his political life to stand with honor and defend this principle in his convention speech. Rather than dishonor his family by endorsing Trump, he instead focused on what the fundamental principles of freedom were that once were the soul and character of the Republican party. Yesterday, that became a bygone era.

Tuesday afternoon, my wife came home and found me in the office listening to Twila Paris’ song, “The Warrior is a Child”. As tears welled up in my eyes, I was literally grieving. She reminded me of another Twila Paris song that was just as appropriate for the times we are in. “God is in Control”. Tuesday, I dropped my sword and cried out “what has become of the country I love?” Indeed, this warrior at that moment was a child. This song is a fitting follow-up to the one posted yesterday. When we put our armor on we need to know He has our back.

This is no time for fear
This is the time for faith and determination
Don’t lose the vision here carried away by emotion
Hold on to all that you hide in your heart
There is one thing that has always been true
It holds the world together

God is in control
We believe that His children will not be forsaken
God is in control
We will choose to remember and never be shaken
There is no power above or beside Him, we know
Oh, God is in control, oh God is in control

The seemingly sudden transformation of the Republican Party into a White Nationalist “Worker’s Party” with a megalomaniac narcissist at its head was shocking, unbelievable and frightening to many of us. It was no surprise to the Creator who endowed us with the unalienable rights Mr. Trump and Hillary Clinton would abrogate. Some Christians believe this is happening as God is about to pour His judgment out on America for rejecting Him. I don’t know if it’s judgment or just the consequences of the angry secularization that has fallen upon us. Either way, believers know that God is in control. This is indeed a time for faith and determination. To get carried away by emotion rather than recapturing the vision of a Judaeo Christian nation that prospered under those principles is to do violence to our children and our children’s children.

History marches on
There is a bottom line drawn across the ages
Culture can make its plan oh, but the line never changes
No matter how the deception may fly
There is one thing that has always been true
It will be true forever
God is in control

You and I are called to lead the march of history and not to be trampled by the plans the secular Culture may make. They may cross the line but we cannot. No matter how strong the deception of “binary choices” and demands to “fall in line” from the Elephant Graveyard may be, we can be confident that doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing. There is one thing that has been true, and will remain true forever. God is in control. And that is a good thing.
